Sony Pictures continues to make announcements regarding their revamp of the Spider-Man franchise, after their announcement that Amazing Spider-Man 3 wouldn’t be released until 2018.  Now, Sony has announced that they will be releasing a spin-off film that stars one of Spider-Man’s female characters in 2017.  There’s no official announcement on which character that would be but a save bet is Felicity Jones’s Felicia Hardy, Black Cat, who appeared in Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Lisa-JoyThe other part of the announcement is that Lisa Joy Nolan (WestworldPushing Daises) has been attached to write the film.  Nolan is a successful writer with several hot scripts bouncing around Hollywood and with a significant connection to some of the strongest shows on HBO.

The big question here is whether or not this film and Sinister Six will be enough to save the struggling Spider-Man franchise while Sony attempts some damage control, as The Amazing Spider-Man was critically panned and not as profitable as Sony hoped it would be.  Beating Marvel and DC to the punch with putting a female character as a lead in a film as a part of a growing comic book universe is a good first step and hopefully the sign of change in the film business, especially after the box office successes of “Lucy” several weeks ago.

Which character would you like to see Sony bring to the silver screen?
