In what will likely end up being the first of many announcements heading our way in collaboration with “Secret Wars“, Spider-Man 2099 has been canceled and in its place Secret Wars 2099 was announced  set to take over for the future Spider-Man in April. Check out the official solicitation below.

When everything ends, it’s time to go back to the future. Revisit the world of 2099 and see it a whole new light, as characters who have never been seen before make their first appearances – including the AVENGERS 2099. Can the ideal of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes survive in a world where megacorporations rule with an iron fist?

You won’t have to say goodbye to the creative team of Peter David and Will Sliney however, who will continue to tell the stories of 2099 from the viewpoint of a brand new team of Avengers facing the perils of “Battleworld”.

“It’s set on Battleworld the way the others are, but honestly, it doesn’t tie into Secret Wars beyond that,” Peter David explained. “The events of Secret Wars proper might be mentioned in passing somewhere, but 2099 is definitely its own story.”

It’s interesting to note that in the original press release from Marvel via IGN, that Spider-Man 2099 is coming to an end and “it’s story will continue in Secret Wars 2099” – which implies that the end of Miguel’s book may lead directly into Secret Wars 2099. Even though Marvel is being coy about the futuristic web-slinger’s fate, chances are good that we will see Miguel’s perspective of Battleworld and the 2099 Avengers if he survives the initial incursion.

Avengers2099_IronManA 2099 version of Iron Man, Captain America, Hawkeye, and Black Widow have all been confirmed as a team of corporate Avengers sponsored by… Alchemax?

“They’re all going to be working for Alchemax,” David said,  “In that respect it’s almost similar to my recent ‘X-Factor,’ except Alchemax is more or less running the United States in 2099.”

The monstrous corporation is behind most of Miguel’s headaches, and perhaps that’s why we don’t see any mention of him in the lineup. Even if these Avengers are this world’s greatest heroes, Spider-Man 2099 has always worked best alone – and at odds with Alchemax. However, if Spider-Man is the odd hero looking in on this title, Marvel makes no mention of him – opting instead to tease readers with little to go on.

It looks like we won’t know where Spider-Man 2099 fits in this story until “Secret Wars” drops this summer – and with it, an entirely new universe that is still being revealed in small announcements such as today’s. Speaking of things Marvel is keeping under wraps, how long exactly will this book be around? When asked, Marvel wouldn’t say if Secret Wars 2099 was planned as a limited series or as an ongoing – does that lend credence to the theory that “Secret Wars” will end along with this book after a few months?

Avengers2099_CapAvengers2099_Hawkeye_BlackWidowPeter David sounds willing to take the 2099 Avengers the distance, “As far as I’m concerned, the series will run as long as Marvel and the readers want me to write it,”.

One thing is for sure; every book, character, and reality under the Marvel Banner is on the line for “Secret Wars” – with no certain resolution in sight. This announcement confirms that 2099 universe will survive the incursion, but whether the Avengers or Spider-Man 2099 make it through Battleworld is still anyone’s guess. Stay tuned for all the Spider-y “Secret Wars” news as the future of the remaining spider-family is revealed.
