MCU Spider-Man Will Be a Witty Peter Parker

It’s been a wild week thanks to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige: who over the course of several interviews has dropped news of whether or not Marvel will retell Spider-Man’s origin story, confirmed Peter Parker in the new films, and teased all that is left to explore in the timeless character – including a focus on Peter’s High School years.

“We want to play with Spider-Man in the high school years because frankly there’ve been five Spider-Man films and the amazing thing about it is, even though there’ve been five Spider-Man films, there are so many things from the comics that haven’t been done yet,” argued Feige. “Not just characters or villains or supporting characters, but sides to his character. The most obvious being the ‘young, doesn’t quite fit in’ kid before his powers, and then the fella that puts on a mask and swings around and fights bad guys and doesn’t shut up, which is something we want to play with and we’re excited about.”

maxresdefaultOf course, most of the noise surrounding the new iteration has been about whether we would be seeing another interpretation of Peter Parker or Miles Morales. We have made the argument before that Peter isn’t inherently caucasian despite his traditional representation – but regardless, we now know with certainty that we will be seeing Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“In terms of the age of an actor we’ll eventually to cast, I don’t know. In terms of the age of what we believe Peter Parker is, I’d say 15-16 is right.”

When he was asked about whether or not Marvel would retell Spider-Man’s origin story in his introduction to the MCU, Kevin laughed and said what most of us were hoping to hear:

“I think people are very familiar with that origin,”

Feige is of course referencing the “Fresh Start” approach that the previous two series have taken to the classic character. Despite all of the problems Sony has had raising Spider-Man to the heights some fans think the story is capable of, the Marvel Studios President is eager to try; asserting that the upcoming take on Spider-Man will far exceed the previous attempts – comparable to the slow-to-perfection Batman franchise.

“Batman was the same way; there had been four Batman movies, and then Batman Begins was able to do something unique and tap into something that hadn’t been seen before in the movies. It’s a similar thing, obviously tonally completely different from Batman, but we’re very excited about any number of things about Spidey and his standalone adventures.”

Feige continued to pour out his love for the Wall-Crawler, “It’s a testament to his character that there have been five movies made already over the last, however long it’s been, 13 years, and yet, there’s so many things that are integral to his character in the comics that haven’t been explored yet.”

If you haven’t started feeling uplifted and positive about one of the biggest creative minds behind Spider-man going forward, check out CBM’s highlights of his ASM 2 criticisms (thanks to the leaked Sony emails).

As for the approach to the character, Feige says that he is very, very funny and very, very witty when he’s in that costume, swinging around. Not as a standup comedian, obviously, but as almost his nervous energy, bothering the criminals with banter as much as with his powers. That’s something that I think we’re excited to explore.” In particular he mentions the Ultimate Spider-Man approach to the character.

Feige had positive things to say about the past iterations of the costume, commenting, “Well, yeah, I mean look, I was more involved in the Raimi ones, and think they did a very good job. But that being said, we’ve already designed the costume, which is different than any of the ones that have come before. And yet ours is classic Spidey, as I think you’ll see.” Sounds like they are further along on this than we could have possible known.

The most interesting development to come out of these interviews is that it seems Marvel always planned to incorporate Spider-Man into their universe. Feige explains, “Spider-Man we knew about when we were doing that announcement in October. It could have gone either way, and Marvel as you well know doesn’t announce announce anything officially until it’s set in stone. So we went forward with that Plan A in October, with the Plan B being, if it were to happen with Sony, how it would all shift. We’ve been thinking about it as long as we’ve been thinking about Phase Three.”
