A year after Marvel plans to unleash the webbed wonder into the wide world of the MCU, Sony will attempt to launch a separate series in the form of an animated movie – tapped to hit theaters July 20, 2018.

Spidey-RGB-LR-LayoutAsset-0b-copyAnnounced Wednesday at CinemaCon, Sony chief Tom Rothman explained that the animated feature would exist “independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing.” Sony Pictures also revealed the Creative team of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller – the Director-Writers behind the Lego Movie.

Via The Wrap, “Lord and Miller are masterminding the animated project, writing the treatment and producing the film, which they will develop with an eye towards directing. The duo [got] their start at Sony directing “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” and the studio wants them to direct this film, though there is no deal in place yet.”

But they won’t be alone. If you enjoyed the old creative team behind the Live-Action Spider-Man films – all the heavy-hitters are coming back for the unique film adaptation of the Webslinger. Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and former Sony chief Amy Pascal will also serve as producers alongside Lord and Miller.

thumbsDetails like Spider-Man’s age, which version of Spider-Man gets used, and whether or not Marvel and Sony plan to collaborate storylines and plot points beyond the character’s history and origin, is still up in the air and up for debate.

Despite Sony’s troubles keeping the Spider-Man Franchise afloat before – one area in which they have always excelled at is the animated cartoons produced in the past. Everything from their last Saturday Morning project:  “Spectacular Spider-Man”, to the highly successful 90’s cartoon “Spider-Man The Animated Series” – have been extremely popular and inspired many kids (including myself) to obsess over Spidey’s adventures in the first place.

There is a concern about the confusion that may be caused, separating a franchise into two different series under two different studios -especially since the Sony film will come “independently” to moviegoers so soon after Marvel tries to rebrand him in their own Cinematic Universe.

But hey – it’s animated and it’s Spider-Man. Everything is Awesome.
