A couple of weeks ago a rumor spread that the new writers for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man movie would be none other than John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein. Readers might recognize those names as the men who were rumored to have been on the list to direct the film before losing out to Jon Watts. Perhaps the Marvel producers loved their take on the character but did not have the confidence that their directing abilities matched with the project. Either way, that rumor has now been confirmed in an interview with NPR and they are now the writers on the upcoming reboot of the Spider-Man series.

maxresdefaultDaley and Goldstein’s first screenplay together was 2011’s Horrible Bosses, before following up with The Incredible Burt WonderstoneCloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, and Horrible Bosses 2. In the following weeks they are releasing Vacation, a film they wrote and directed together.

When questioned about their approach to the character, Daley had this to say:

He’s a sharp kid and witty and kind of deals with the fact that he’s an outcast and a geek through humor. It is sort of the safety net for geeks like us, so I think we can totally relate to where he’s coming from. As well as the superpowers, which we also have.

The reviews for Vacation have started to trickle in today and they haven’t been very positive, with Scott Foundas of Variety saying, “A trip to the corner store with this cast of characters would be an endurance test – which, with any luck, is as far as the movie’s box office returns will carry it.” Still, with so many collaborators and studios controlling parts of a film it is hard to speculate if this is any indication about their vision for the new movie and skills as writers. Here at Superior Spider-Talk we are taking a wait-and-see approach, but feel free to speculate all you will about this writing team.
