Marvel Announces “Civil War II”

When “Captain America: Civil War” comes out next May it will have been nearly ten years since Marvel first launched the “Civil War” comic arc. “Civil War” has had a lasting effect on the “other” MCU (Marvel Comics Universe) and the events of that arc were even adapted in still running Secret Wars event taking place in The Warzone of Battleworld. In Secret Wars, instead of that fight being resolved after a few major brawls, this new Civil War re-imagines it as a conflict that never ended.

The “Civil War” movie is loosely based on the original comic book arc, an event that divided heroes and readers alike, that originally ran from July 2006 – January 2007. It made, and still makes, sense. Who doesn’t want to see who would win in a fight between their favorite superheroes?

While that may be a simplification of the issues at hand, it’s still a part of what made us want to see what would happen if Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, went toe-to-toe with Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man. Those who read the comics know the answer to that. We’ll also get to find out on May 6th, 2016 how Marvel Studios portrays this battle on the silver screen.

Screen Shot 2015-12-10 at 8.39.14 AMA few months ago, Marvel sent out postcards to comic book retailers seemingly teasing a sequel to “Civil War” (the comics, not the movie… keep up). On one side of the postcard was an image of the All New, All Different Iron Man duking it out with the current Captain America, Sam Wilson. On the other, simply the Roman numeral “II” done in a font strikingly similar to that used for the titles of the original “Civil War” arc along with a tentative release date of “Spring 2016.” Since then, not only has it been confirmed that “Civil War II” is definitely coming, but the principal creative team of Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez have been announced. This is the same team that is behind the current Invincible Iron Man series, one of the best reviewed post-Secret Wars comics.

It’s obvious that Marvel is going to try to use the release of the movie (which, let’s be honest, is going to be huge) as built-in publicity for the event. In recent years, ever since the success of the first Iron Man movie, the synergistic relationship between the comics and the movies, and now television shows, has become more and more apparent. But what relationship, if any, will “Civil War II” and “Captain America: Civil War” be? And, perhaps more importantly, what part will our favorite friendly neighborhood wall-crawler play in it, if any?

In the original, Spider-Man/Peter Parker played a pivotal role, being one of the highest profile superheroes that had a secret identity. While we’ve covered that secret identities don’t really play much of a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they have always been an essential part of most comic book characters. For the most part, secret identities are really just a character’s true, “civilian” persona, and the face they adopt around their friends, family, and sometimes their co-workers. They usually do 12357995_921126171304265_134035923_neverything in their power to protect their secret identities and keep their personal and heroic lives compartmentalized in an attempt to keep said friends, families, co-workers safe and secluded from their enemies. Unless the U.S. Government introduces a Superhero Registration Act… and Tony Stark is your bosom buddy, he makes you a super-sweet new uniform and he asks you to reveal the thing that you have spent your entire superheroic life protecting.
Excuse me? You didn’t know that at one point in Marvel continuity everyone in the entire world knew that Peter Parker was Spider-Man? I’m not talking about Ultimate Universe, dead Peter Parker. I’m talking Earth-616 main continuity, bud. What, didn’t you start reading comics until after “One More Day”?

Now the famous Spider-Man mask is securely back over Dr. Parker’s face and most of the world has no idea who he is. It seems a safe bet that Peter won’t be taking his mask off again for “Civil War II,” so we are curious just what role he will be playing in the upcoming story.
