SONY’s Animated Spider-Man Movie Delayed

Sony Pictures Animation has announced that their take on Spider-Man will be delayed until December 21st, 2018.

thumbsNot to be confused with Marvel’s Live-Action movie coming out in 2017, Sony’s animated version of the world-renowned wall-crawler was originally slated for a  July release – but was moved back due to a scheduling conflict. Originally a couple months away from Avengers: Infinity War Part 1, the animated film is now releasing much closer to Marvel Studios’ Inhumans and the often competitive Christmas box office time.

Spider-Film experts will note that it will be a first for the often Summer-bound hero, with most of the web-spinner’s past movies opening in May and June – Spidey is used to opening the blockbuster season, not closing it.

Announced last April at CinemaCon, Sony chief Tom Rothman explained that the animated feature would exist “independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing.” Sony Pictures also revealed the Creative team of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller – the Director-Writers behind the Lego Movie.

“I will say, it is not just another Peter Parker origin story that you’ve seen 400 times,” Miller previously told IGN“It is something totally unique and different and not like anything you’ve seen. That’s all I can say… and you’re going to love it!”

467406-sm107a011Despite Sony’s troubles keeping the Spider-Man Franchise afloat before – one area in which they have always excelled at is the animated cartoons produced in the past. Everything from their last Saturday Morning project:  “Spectacular Spider-Man”, to the highly successful 90’s cartoon “Spider-Man The Animated Series” – have been extremely popular and inspired many kids (including myself) to obsess over Spidey’s adventures in the first place.

There is a concern about the confusion that may be caused, separating a franchise into two different series under two different studios -especially since the Sony film will come “independently” to moviegoers so soon after Marvel tries to rebrand him in their own Cinematic Universe.

But hey – it’s animated and it’s Spider-Man. Everything is Awesome.
