While it’s all but understood that Spider-Man will be making an appearance in next May’s Captain America: Civil War, Marvel Studios co-president Louis D’Esposito posted some interesting Doctor Strange set photos this past Tuesday, one of which featured a certain young actor.

So, what was Tom Holland doing on set? Was it just to visit with fellow Brit, Benedict Cumberbatch? Or was it for something far more strange and spectacular?

In reality, probably not. It’s all wishful thinking at this point, but really, wouldn’t you like to see as much of Spidey in the MCU as possible now that he’s part of it? Spider-Man is probably the most popular character in Marvel Comics, or at least the most recognizable, on par with Superman and Batman for DC. It’s been over seven years since the inception of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Robert Downey Jr. starring in Iron Man in 2008. Since then, the Iron Man character has seemingly been the main driving force in this shared universe; RDJ has appeared in three Iron Man movies, both Avengers movies and made a cameo in The Incredible Hulk.

Chris Evan’s is no stranger to popping up in Marvel movies where he’s not expected. In addition to starring in the two Captain America movies (as well as in the upcoming Civil War) and the two Avengers movies (so far) he made a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance where it’s Chris Evans, pretending to be Tom Hiddleston, pretending to be Chris Evans, pretending to be Loki, pretending to be Steve Rogers… a Capception, if you will…

And let’s not forget Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. He’s been in seven of the twelve MCU movies (in a cameo capacity at the very least) and even appeared in two episodes of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Marvel is not afraid to mix it up and it’s obvious that they are determined to make their shared universe feel just that way. Events in one area and involving some characters can potentially directly effect the entire existing universe. In having these characters that appear in multiple movies and shows, we also get the feeling that everything is connected. There’s already rumors that Cap and Tony Stark might show up in the new Spider-Man stand alone movie. Could Spidey cameo in the strange one’s film?

We know that Marvel has done it’s best to prevent much information and any photos of Spidey from the upcoming Civil War movie, so it’s not likely that they’d let this slip if it was any more than just Holland visiting the set for kicks. If he were to make a cameo in Doctor Strange they would probably not give it up like this (or at all). What purpose could Spidey have for visiting the Doc? Most likely not to get help in cosmically annulling his marriage. The MCU Spidey is a little young for that, yet. Still, now that Sony and Marvel have made the deal for Spider-Man to be part of the MCU, what better way to establish this than to have him show up in not one but two movies leading up to his solo movie? Even if it is just for a swing-by. One can dream.
