For fans of Radioactive Spider-Gwen the following announcement is likely to trigger a mixed reaction of both sadness and joy, as we got both the announcement that the series will continue and tell a story featuring Gwenom but also that one of the co-creators of the character will be leaving the book.

Guardians_of_Knowhere_1_Gwenom_Guillory_VariantFirstly comes the announcement from Robbi Rodriguez at C2E2 that “Gwenom is happening.” The character first appeared on a variant cover for Guardians of Knowhere #1 drawn by Rob Guillory, in a highly stylized interpretation of what the character might look like. This wouldn’t be the first time a variant cover featuring Gwen Stacy mixed up with another popular Marvel character would get its own comic series/story, just look to the recently announced Gwenpool series.

Rodriguez confirmed that the story will begin after the upcoming “Spider-Women” crossover that spans the next few issues of Radioactive Spider-GwenSilk, and Spider-Woman. Jason LaTour, Rico Renzi, and Rodriguez will be returning to tell this year-long tale, that will feature a toned down version of the Gwenom character that appeared on the variant cover. Rodriguez stressed that if the character was popular that he wouldn’t be surprised if she got her own spin-off series as well.

Rodriguez is clearly excited about the development, and hopes you are as well, but it is all tinged with a certain bitter flavor as Robbi also announced that this story would be his final comic book story and that he would be retiring from the medium.

In a recent episode of The Ultimate Spin podcast, Robbi told us about his eye condition, called keratoconus, that has caused continuous damage to his cornea and has rendered him legally blind. He has bravely continued to work in comics, even co-creating Spider-Gwen, but one could imagine that the work has become increasingly difficult and a strain on his eyesight.

Here at Superior Spider-Talk we are sad to see Robbi go, as he has been a wonderful support to our site and shows (giving us one of our most memorable interviews), is a wonderful person with unending generosity to his fans, and created one of the most popular creations at Marvel comics in years. Here’s hoping that the Gwenom storyline is a joy for Robbi to create and a beautiful swan song for his work.
