Sony Pictures Purchases Multiple Spider-Man Domain Names

While the MCU-based reboot of the Sony/Marvel version of Spider-Man is still over a year away, it looks like potential titles for the movie are being looked into. We might be on the cusp of knowing what the next Spidey movie will be called. Multiple domain names have been purchased by Sony, including SpiderManComingOfAgeMovie.com, SpiderManGreatnessAwaitsMovie.com and SpiderManHomecomingMovie.com, all of which lead directly back to the main Sony Pictures website.

Amazing_Spider-Man_Vol_1_252The “Spider-Man: Homecoming” title may be the most interesting (and possibly most likely) of the potential titles and is the only one that directly references the comic books. Amazing Spider-Man #252 takes place after Secret Wars (1984, not 2015) and has Spider-Man, along with the rest of a select group of heroes and villains, return to Earth after having been whisked away the Beyonder to take part in a cosmic battle of good vs evil. You’ll have to read the back issues for the details on that!

So, we know that Secret Wars isn’t even a thing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Civil War is. Going by the trailer that actually featured the introduction of the web head, it’s apparent that Peter Parker shows up for the big battle between Team Cap and Team Iron Man that takes place at the German airport. For a highschooler, that’s quite a ways away from his home of Forest Hill, Queens. Apparently, Mr. Tony Stark has decided to take Spidey on a heck of a field trip. Maybe homecoming is a reference to Peter’s returning to New York after doing all of that superheroing, or it could just be a meta-reference to Spider-Man’s return to the Marvel Universe.

Of course, this by no means is a definite. It’s possible that Sony has just purchased these domain names either to lock them down as potential official websites for the upcoming Spider-Man movie or they could be just trying to throw us off. Either way, it’s exciting that things are happening with Spider-Man and I, for one, can not wait to see him make his MCU debut!

Tom Holland will debut as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War when it hits theaters on May 6th, 2016. The new Spider-Man movie (whatever they decide to name it) is scheduled to be released on July 7th, 2017.
