11:43pm CT Update 1: We have two new videos posted today from the creative team behind the game with a lot of new details about the game!

That time of year is here, the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) out of Los Angeles, there’s a new Spider-Man video-game , and we have the trailer!

Never has a trailer thrilled and confused Spider-Fans so much…

The first thing you will notice is the city… a hive of people and the skyline of a beautifully rendered Manhattan. Then the voice-over pauses, the music swells, and suddenly Spider-Man is onscreen.

You will be hard-pressed to not be shocked by the large white spider on the red, white and blue costume redesign, but the trailer is good enough to move you past that. Spidey spins and crashes through a bustling coffee-shop, cannonballs into enemies, and leaps off a building in a fashion that seems to proudly declare that a new costume isn’t going to change one fact: this game looks good.

So…SO good

The trailer comes from Insomniac’s presentation at E3. Taking over duties from Beenox, Insomniac looks to put a large helping of polish into the new wall-crawling PS4-exclusive title that fans haven’t seen for a few years.

“Spider-Man is one of the most iconic and well-known characters in the world, and we’re thrilled to be given the responsibility to create a brand new, authentic Spider-Man story,” said Insomniac on PlayStation Blog.

Freeing Spider-Man games from a need to tie in with the movies and their shipping schedule could give them the time and freedom to excel in a way the previous titles have been unable to do, just like in the manner of the Batman, Arkham series.

But you know that, you have already watched the trailer a dozen times. You want pictures, pictures of Spider-Man! We have that, a closer look at some very familiar henchmen, and every Easter egg you might have missed…

1. The New Suit

New and exciting costumes have always been a big part of Spider-Man games – but starting with a new costume? That seems to be the case with the new red, white, and blue suit that swings into the trailer. With some obvious pulls from the suit in Civil War (nice eye lens!) this version of Spidey’s underoos comes with a big, bright, white spider-symbol on the front and back.

“Take control of an experienced Peter Parker who is more masterful at fighting crime. At the same time, he’s struggling to balance his absurdly chaotic personal life and career.”

So no origin story, check. What else do we know about this Spider-Man and the suit he wears? Not much actually. Theories range from the new look showing a simple progression from Civil War, being upgradable (with this being the base outfit), all the way to the symbol’s shape hinting at an appearance from Venom. A white venom (Anti-Venom) might make sense if this is an older Spidey, especially since the trailer also has…

2. Inner Demons

That’s right – everyone’s favorite immortal lackeys from the exotic south side borough are here and the Spidey isn’t having it:

No mistaking the masks that the goons in the trailer wear…

Of course… that doesn’t guarantee that the master contraster himself will show up, but I would bet that we see Mr. Negative – especially since it looks like we’re getting an…

3. Expanded and Lore-Heavy Universe

A few careful viewings show a world with a rich backstory. Spidey fans may recognize this shelter as one of Mr. Negative’s bases of operation, FEAST:

feast

I wonder if Aunt May is volunteering at the FEAST center?

But if something negative (ahem) does happen at the local soup kitchen, you can count one one newspaper to report on it, THE DAILY BUGLE:

bugle

…and probably blame Spider-Man.

But my favorite Easter Egg of all? A familiar name is running for Mayor…

osborn

Somebody has to clean up the city after all…

With FEAST, Mr. Negative, and a high-profile Norman Osborn taking center stage, at least if this trailer is to be believed, this game seems to be taking a lot of cues from the Brand New Day era of Spider-Man comics. Could this mean Amazing Spider-Man writer Dan Slott, who previously wrote “Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions” and worked heavily on Brand New Day, could be returning to pen the game?

We’ve already received word that this Spider-Man is operating in his own independent universe, separate from the comics and movies, let’s hope this allows the team at Insomniac to get creative with Spider-Man’s supporting cast and villains in a way that the other games may not have been able to be.
