Good news for those anxiously awaiting Gerry Conway and Ryan Stegman’s Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows this fall! Comicbook.com has released the first look at Mary Jane and Annie’s costumes for the series. However, Comicbook.com seems to gloss over the implications of a costume for both of these characters to talk about Stegman’s inspiration behind the designs, so let’s unpack that just a little.

renew-your-vows-designs-195223-dc979Other than the basic concept, we are not entirely sure how this Renew Your Vows relates to the one Dan Slott penned during Secret Wars. But from these costumes, I think it is safe to assume that Mary Jane will be joining the super powered Peter and Annie on costumed adventures. Does MJ get empowered in Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows?

The costume itself is conservative, yet elegant. It is a white body suit with an accented, red pattern that mirrors the familiar red of Spider-Man’s red-and-blues, except the “belt” is a bit wider to extenuate MJ’s hips thus giving more of a boyshorts look to the waistpiece rather than a belt. The mask is reminiscent of the half mask on Jessica Drew’s classic costume. This allows for MJ’s hair to be styled in a high bun as well as show off a pair of large earrings. Stegman said he wanted to design something “sleek and fashionable” and while large earrings are far from practical in a physical confrontation, I think the design hits the mark for sleek and fashionable. (The earrings appear to be gone in a second image released by Comicbook.com, so perhaps they didn’t make it off the original design sketch).

Annie’s costume doubles as armor, with additional padding on the shoulders, knees, and elbows as well a mask that looks like it doubles as a helmet. When asked about the costume, Stegmen said that he “approached it as a parent would, since I’m a parent myself.” These pads would be analogous to safety pads children wear when learning how to ride a bike, and Annie is only allowed to swing while wearing them – much to her chagrin. The colors recall the Ben Reilly hoodie costume, making Ben Reilly call-backs a tradition among alternate time line Parker children. The chest piece appears to also be made of hardened armor, which clasps to a back piece via straps that wrap around the underarm area. Under the padding, Annie is wearing a black bodysuit accented by a red torso piece with blue webbing. The helmet-mask is also a half-face mask with two pigtails hanging out the bottom extending to Annie’s waist.

As for Spidey himself, it looks like he’s going to be wearing the classic red-and-blues. From the one image shown, the blues are almost completely covered by shadowy blacks, so it looks like Stegman is going for a darker pallet on Spider-Man.

That’s all of the details released so far. We’ll keep you posted on any new and exciting reveals as we count down to this hotly anticipated title.
