For several months, fans have speculated as to what role Disney star Zendaya will play in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming.  As recently as last month, director Jon Watts has referred to her character as “Michelle,” leading to some speculation that she would play the more recent character Michele Gonzales. Michele Gonzales, a character introduced in 2009, seemed like an odd fit for a movie based on the high school years of Peter Parker. A new report suggests Zendaya may not play Gonzales at all and that the name “Michelle” was simply a way to throw fans off.

According to The Wrap, at least one version of the script teases Zendaya’s role with a series of clues. This would be consistent with the character’s initial introduction, which hinted at the character long before her full appearance in 1966’s Amazing Spider-Man #42 by Stan Lee and John Romita.

Zendaya would be the third actress cast for a live-action Mary Jane Watson, but only the second to actually appear in the final version of the film. Kirsten Dunst, of course, portrayed her in the Sam Raimi trilogy, but Shailene Woodley’s appearance was cut from Amazing Spider-Man 2.

For now, this news must be regarded with a grain of salt until it is further substantiated. None of the parties involved, including director Jon Watts, Marvel Studios, Sony, or Zendaya herself, have confirmed that this is, in fact, the role she will play. We’ll have to wait a little longer to see if the reports pan out. We should not have to wait long – new casting details seem to roll out every day. Even if Marvel does manage to keep her role under wraps, we’ll find out for sure in July 2017 when the movie is released worldwide.
