Ron Frenz and Kevin Shinick to Finish Up “Superior Spider-Man Team-Up”

It should come as no surprise that with the end of Superior Spider-Man will come the end of Superior Spider-Man Team-Up.  The final issues of the series, #11 and #12, will both be written by Kevin Shinick (“Robot Chicken” “Mad”) as a two-part story that looks back to a team-up between the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus.  While Superior Spider-Man Team-Up might be ending, Shinick teased to Newsarama that the team-up Spider-Man book might not be over quite yet:

Newsarama: It seems Superior Spider-Man is coming to an end soon — but will Superior Spider-Man Team-Up continue on?

Kevin Shinick:  Having Spider-Man team up with different heroes is always a good idea.  Whether they call it Avenging Spider-ManSpider-Man Team-Up or Superior Spider-Man Team-Up you better believe we’re going to have a lot of fun pairing everyone’s favorite wall crawler with people that make his life more interesting.  (Notice I didn’t say that make his life better.)

Newsarama: What characters are you looking forward to possibly teaming Spidey with – or fighting – in future issues?

Kevin Shinick: Oh there’s going to be a lot fighting for sure. But it’s going to be between me and whoever tries to tell me that I can no longer write for Spider-Man.

So it looks like Shinick is going to go out fighting for the series to continue.  We’ve been fans of issue #9 and #10 and look forward to seeing the title continue on in whatever form it may eventually take.

Yet, an even more exciting rumor has begun to swirl around the internet regarding the artwork in the issue.  We’ve always known that the great Ron Frenz and Sal Buscema would be returning to the book to do the pencils and inks that form the flashbacks in these issues.

Anyone who listens to the Superior Spider-Talk podcast knows that Ron Frenz is a great friend of the show (check out his two amazing appearances in episodes #14 and #26).  This implies that this story must take place somewhere during the time that Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz were the creative team on Amazing Spider-Man, beginning with the iconic black suit reveal in issue #252.

Marco Checchetto is listed as providing all the other art on the books, but rumor has it that he has fallen a bit behind on his work and that Ron Frenz will be pencilling all of issues #10 and 11.  This rumor hasn’t been substantiated but I’ve reached out to Ron Frenz for comment and will update this post when I find out.

Update: (2/26/14 9:05 PM EST):

I reached out to Kevin Shinick about the art on this book and this was his response:

So it looks like that rumor is officially dead.  The art duties will be shared between teams.

What do you think about the ending and potential rebirth of the Team-Up book?  Are you excited for the return of Ron Frenz and Sal Buscema?
