Gerard Way Is Not, Not Writing SP//dr

There has been some confusion over an email that Marvel sent out earlier this week, alerting retailers to a sudden change with the creative team on Edge of Spider-Verse #5. The email reported  Gerard Way being replaced with a “To Be Determined” writer:

EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #5 (OF 5) & VAR ($3.99, FOC 09/22/14) will be written by a TBD writer, not Gerard Way which was previously solicited.

Now don’t get your jammies rustled over the “To-Be-Determined writer” – this all appears to be an “oops” on Marvel’s part; and it’s a small “oops” involving some miscommunication.

Rich Johnston (bleedingcool.com) managed to get ahold of someone at Marvel, who when questioned about the email said: “That was an erroneous report.” The email’s notification appears to be a mistake that, for whatever reason, made it all the way to the people that we trust to stock our comic shops with “Spider-Verse” goodness.

The source was not listed, but Nick Lowe also confirmed the mix-up on Twitter – and the language is similar to the previous statement issued:

Edge of Spider-Verse #5 introduces “SP//dr, a story about Peni Parker – a 14-year-old girl who suddenly finds herself co-piloting a machine (robot/ megazord/ washing?) alongside an actual radioactive spider. With a Japanese manga influence, SP//dr looks like “Neon Genesis Evangelion” meets “Pacific Rim”. It’s an exciting concept, and one that lead singer of “My Chemical Romance, Gerard Way, seems eager to tell.

Not much more has been revealed about SP//dr outside of the creative team and little promotion art; but like most of the new realities being revealed in “Spider-Verse”, Sp//dr has been met with positive feedback by fans. Will the hiccup continue to excite consumers about this alternate reality’s Spider-Man? Or will Marvel’s blunder confuse comic book stores who don’t see Lowe’s Tweet? Hopefully the miscommunication will get completely sorted out, and we will be back on track in time for “Spider-Verse.”
