It seems Marvel has found its new Aunt May – in the form of Oscar-winning actress Marisa Tomei!

Variety has reported that Marisa will join Tom Holland (Spider-Man) in the first installment of the Marvel/Sony franchise.

Tomei is known for her roles in “Crazy Stupid Love,” “My Cousin Vinny,” and more recently in “Trainwreck” with Amy Schumer.

From Variety: “While insiders could not say where things stood in the deal-making process, they have added that an offer was made late last week for the Oscar-winning actress to join Tom Holland…”

This could mean a number of different things and could imply that Tomei could still turn down the role.

If this is true it will be an interesting departure from the conventional casting of Aunt May as an senior woman raising Peter in the wake of Uncle Ben’s death. Perhaps this is the first of many nods to the inspiration this series is taking from the Ultimate Spider-Man title, where Aunt May was a younger, ex-hippie who began raising Peter in her early 20’s before the untimely death of his parents. Fans of that series will know just how much more interesting of a character Aunt May became under those unique circumstances.

This news is still developing and we will have more as it is available. Marvel and Sony have not commented, and Variety has not yet disclosed their sources.
