Spider-Fans rejoice! Or be fearful, depending on how you take the news. Originally to be released on July 28th, 2017, Sony Pictures has moved up the release date to July 7th. That’s a full three less weeks that we have to wait to see the web-slinger in his first solo picture to take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
This can mean one or more of several things. Are they just trying to push the film out quicker for whatever reason? Hopefully not, as we don’t need or want an unnecessarily rushed movie. Maybe they’re just ahead of schedule. Now that’s not a bad thing, but again, why rush? Are they trying to avoid competition with other Sony movies? Potentially.
It looks like there’s a lot of shuffling around of release dates at both Sony and Disney. Originally, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was scheduled to hit theaters on July 7th, 2015 but was moved up to May 26th, 2017. That date was supposed to be when Star Wars: Episode VIII would be released, but we found out today that it was being moved back to December 15th, 2017. Maybe this isn’t a bad strategy, The Force Awakens is currently breaking records with a December release. Finally, Sony’s reboot of Jumanji has been moved to Spidey’s original release date of July 28th, 2017.
The Russo brothers, Sony and Marvel/Disney have all remained rather tight-lipped as to how Spider-Man will actually fit into the MCU, we do know that he will be making his debut in Captain America: Civil War which will be released on May 6 of this year, unless that changes for some reason. The lockdown on any video or pictures of the wall-crawler has been pretty much complete. However, while we’ve seen neither hide nor hair of what Spidey will look like in Civil War, although we did get a glipse of some new Spider-Swag earlier this month that was rumored to be based on the design of the new costume.
The as of yet untitled Spider-Man reboot will be written by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein, directed by Jon Watts, star Tom Holland as the titular Spider-Man and is the first of many planned movies produced by Sony in partnership with Marvel Studios.
