Web Warriors #6 – REVIEW

Writer Mike Costa and artist David Baldeon take a breather from their five-part series opener to give readers a (mostly) done-in-one issue with Web Warriors #6. Most of the team of webslingers carries over from “Electroverse”, with Lady Reilly (steampunk Spider-Woman) and Octavia Otto keeping the roster seats warm for Billy Braddock (Spider-UK) and Mayday Parker (the former Spider-Girl, now Spider-Woman of Earth-982) who are missing in action and presumed dead.

WEBWAR2015006-int2-2-1c48bThis issue is narrated by Spider-Man Noir and opens with a flashback recap from Noir’s perspective. A resident of Earth-90124, Noir relates his difficulties in adapting to the team lifestyle to the readers. The crux of this issue, however, takes the team and readers to Earth-50101 (Pavitir Prabhakar’s home) to face a legion of Venom-like possessed individuals. Noir’s story is continued on throughout the issue, which includes chances for each member of the team to sling some webs and show readers why they belong in this comic.

Through Noir’s perspective, Costa gives readers a summary of the team, and makes no secret that the team is not so much “team” as a collection of individuals. Noir’s assessment of Spider-Gwen is the most telling, in my opinion, as it insinuates she’s more than competent to be left to her solo adventures. Costa and crew don’t bid her farewell, but through Noir’s description to the reader, they do make it clear that she has less of potential for character development in this series than in her own.

Baldeon gives readers a visually electrified story. The characters are all animated, and not just in the manner that Spider-Ham is a cartoon pig. Every character is expressive and tells a story beyond the word balloons Joe Caramagna presents on the page. Facial expressions and gestures tell the tales of determination, relief, surprise, and even disappointment. Mix those expressions in with a wide array of Spider-folk fighting Venom-demon-people and the art is so packed with exciting images that every panel becomes an invitation to stop and study.

As he did throughout “Electroverse”, Baldeon includes some fun little visual winks and nods throughout the issue. In Web Warriors #6, sharp-eyed readers might even spy Betty Rubble and Wilma Flintstone lookalikes at the club on Noir’s world, thanks to Baldeon and colorists Matt Yackey and Rachelle Rosenberg.

WEBWAR2015006-int2-3-f66aaA done-in-one adventure, with subplots spinning out of the developments in this issue, Web Warriors #6 assures readers that every adventure is not going to be a collection of other-dimensional Spider-Men (and Women) fighting a similar collection of other-dimensional foes of the month. Additionally, Costa and Baldeon set Noir on a path for development and investigation in future arcs, major and minor.

While multiple worlds are threatened, the team/non-team continues to find its balancing point, with plenty of entertainment along the way. Costa and Baldeon continue to deliver entertaining reads, despite the threats to multiple worlds. Spider-Man is one of those characters that is infinitely recognizable and frequently associated with fun, so when infinite Spider-People are available, there is certain to be at least a little fun to be had. Web Warriors #6 is just another example of the kind of fun Marvel – and comics in general – are capable of producing. Web Warriors #6 is another enjoyable issue in a wonderfully enjoyable series, as Costa and Baldeon are truly worl- – no, UNIVERSE-building.
