Web Warriors #5 – REVIEW

Picking up where Web Warriors #5 left off, Earth-803 greets readers into a plan set by Spider-UK and Lady Spider. The latter is the webslinger calling this Earth home, while the former is the default leader of the Web Warriors. Written by Mike Costa, drawn by David Baldeon, inked by Walden Wong and Roberto Poggi, lettered by Joe Caramagna, and colored by Jason Keith, readers learn of the collaboration between the Spider-People as they attempt to trap the Electros and short out the Electro-ized equivalent of the Supreme Intelligence.

WEBWAR2015005-int2-2-366d7Walden Wong and Roberto Poggi are well-suited to ink Baldeon’s lively characters, bringing rich shadows and visible textures to Baldeon’s drawings. Keith really amps up the visuals, however with lightning thrown by, through, and around the Electros peppering the panels of Web Warriors #5. The bright white and shocking blue make for brilliant contrast across Baldeon’s figures, which Keith fills with reds, blues, greens, and yellows, making every crayon and marker manufacturer squeal in delight.

Keith is given some wonderful imagery to shade in, as Baldeon is very sharp and concise with his lines. His inkers keep everything clean and distinct, with bold lines separating figures and foregrounds, carving the panels into color-ready receptacles. Baldeon’s style is so lively and fluid, that even when characters are just standing around, they display twinges of personality. Sometimes those markers are generated by pose, sometimes by expression, sometimes by camera choice. Through his artwork in the entire issue of Web Warriors #5, Baldeon makes it abundantly clear that he is having fun with what he is doing.

If readers miss the cue to join in on the fun, Baldeon provides additional opportunities to join in, from an Electro Tyrannosaurus to Spider-Gwen kicking out an Electro while Caramagna labels the event with a very comic book-ready “KRAK!” While Baldeon clearly seems as though he has favorites in his artwork, he keeps the panels fresh and moving in their own right, as much leading Costa’s script as following the writer’s plot.

WEBWAR2015005-int2-3-85b8cThat script and story take Web Warriors to a new spot by the end of the story, with some significant developments along the way. The original solicit text promised a change to the title’s lineup, and this issue delivers. Costa makes the change in an organic, story-driven way, but leaves hope for reunion. In the wake of the development, however, the first arc of Web Warriors draws to a close and the crew of webslingers is set for a lineup refresh.

The conclusion of the threat itself is well-crafted and rich in comic book science, amplifying the fun, Silver Age center of this comic. From here, I am very interested to see where Costa, Baldeon, Caramagna, Keith and crew take the Web Warriors. Sure, the Spider-Man legend is deep enough where exploring infinite variations on each villain could be entertaining, but variety is the spice of life and storytelling. As is shown in this issue, anything can happen with this cast and at any time. After this five-parter, it might be nice to get to know the current cast a bit more before hopping along to the next Earth and cross-dimensional congregation of Spidey’s foes.
