Last week we teased the possible existence of a new Spider-Man title that would be launching at the end of the Superior Spider-Man series and launching alongside the new Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 3) #1.  Many, including Bleeding Cool, speculated that this new series would be a rumored, Peter David helmed Spider-Man 2099 series.  This seemed to be validated by the comments left by exiting editor Stephen Wacker in the Spider-Mail column in the back of Superior Spider-Man #27.

It seems that Wacker, the eternal internet prankster, could have had the last laugh with his final editorial note, though the Spider-Man 2099 series could come later in the year.  Over the weekend Newsarama reported that Marvel Comics will be releasing a five-part story called The Amazing Spider-Man Year One: Learning to Crawl the will run alongside the new Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 3) series.  The series will run from May to September and will release a new issue every month.  The story will be written by Dan Slott, with art by Ramon Perez and covers from Alex Ross.

The story will follow a flashback to the beginning days of Peter Parker’s time as Spider-Man, right after the moments where he confronted the Burglar and realized the tragic weight of his responsibilities.  When Newsarama interviewed Slott, they asked him about the villain that would appear in this book.

Newsarama: So Spider-Man’s learning to become a superhero – I take it there are villains involved? And if so, are they those from those first three issues or perhaps someone surprising?

Slott: Readers will meet an all-new villain, but unlike other stories like this where the new villain is planned as this giant, earth-shattering force like Mr. Sinister who’s the secret villain behind everything, in this case it’s not. This is actually going down a trickier path, to try to create a villain who will feel like a Spider-Man villain of old. It’ll feel like you could have read about this guy at the same time you saw the first appearances of Mysterio, Electro or Sandman. But while we’re aiming for that zone, this villain will have an interesting twist that makes him have much more in common with Peter than the others.

When you look at all of Spider-Man’s earliest villains, they’re all adults. Peter is 15 years old, dressing up as a superhero, and fighting full-grown, mature adults – some guys even as old as the Vulture. What you’ll see with this new villain is Peter fighting someone his own age for the first time. With all the high school drama he goes through during the day, this brings all those problems he has in the school yard and puts it on the super villain.

The biggest change that comes along with the announcement of this book is how it will be affecting the monthly print schedule and release of Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 3) books.  Comic Book Resources interviewed Dan Slott and he had this to say:

CBR:  Ultimately, it sounds like you plan for the events of Spider-Man Year One: Learning to Crawl will come back to affect the present day action in the new volume of Amazing Spider-Man.

Slott: Yes! This is going to be running in tandem with Amazing, where instead of Amazing twice a month, what we’re doing is every month you get an issue of Amazing and an issue of Learning to Crawl, which will be under the Amazing Spider-Man banner. You’ll get that for five months. Then, when Learning to Crawl is done, the stories are going to fold into each other. In the very next issue of Amazing, you’ll see how Learning to Crawl affects the present day.

Seems like Amazing Spider-Man: Year One: Learning to Crawl 1.1 – 1.5 are going to be an exciting look back into the past of Peter Parker that will tie into current continuity and storylines that will be occurring in Amazing Spider-Man (vol.3).  Color me excited and curious, what do you think?
