Several weeks ago at SDCC ’14 Marvel hosted their annual Women of Mavel panel featuring such names as Adri Cowan, Lorraine Cink, Victoria Alonso, Katie Cook, Alexis Auditore, Rachelle Rosenberg, Joanna Estep, Margueritte Bennett, and Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso, who was nominated as an “honorary woman” by Lorraine Cink.
There were a ton of announcements about the state of women in Marvel’s book, after a huge push this past year that featured Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel, She-Hulk, and Electra. Big news was made recently when Marvel announced that Thor would become a woman in upcoming issues in the series. All of this is Marvel’s attempt to bring women to a market that has been predominantly male and misogynistic in its depiction of women.
In the middle of the panel the announcement was made that a new series entitled Spider-Woman would be launching in the midst of the upcoming “Spider-Verse” event. The series will be written by Avenger’s Arena‘s Dennis Hopeless with art by Iron Man‘s Greg Land. The series will begin by featuring Jessica Drew leading a “spider army,” featuring the new character Silk, against the forces of evil in “Spider-Verse.”
Writer Dennis Hopeless said that the series will take on its own life after “Spider-Verse” and see Jessica wearing many different hats and roles inside the Marvel Universe.
