Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has seen Captain America: Civil War. What did he think about it? In a sort video Q&A on his official Facebook page the other day, he had these praises to give:

I saw Civil War and I think it’s incredible. It’s one of the best Marvel movies ever, and I can’t believe what a wonderful job the Russo brothers did. And the cast. Oh my God, they’re so good. So it’s an amazing film and people are going to be really excited to see that come summertime.

While these comments should be taken with a grain of salt (he is currently still contracted to direct Guardians Vol. 2 for Marvel, after all, and probably doesn’t want to bite the hand that feeds him) it is exciting to to hear him call it “one of the best Marvel films ever.” This coming from the guy that helped bring us one of the highest rated Marvel movies to date.*

1451529103241Again, being that Gunn is employed by Marvel, it could be easy to dismiss his statements as lip service, but it should be noted that this response was to a fan asking about his thoughts on Doctor Strange, not the upcoming Captain America threequel. He responded that he “really liked” the script and the images he’d seen before beginning his unsolicited rave reviews of Civil War.

This, in and of itself, is pretty cool news. But it’s what he said about our favorite friendly neighborhood wall-crawler that has this writer’s interest piqued.

I’m trying to think about what is cool to say or not. But I will say this one thing. Tom Holland is […] off-the-charts awesome. Off. The. Charts. Awesome. Off the charts. Truly. Hand to my heart, he’s amazing.

Now, we reported in mid-December that Sony executives had screened Civil War so they could approve of the Spider-Man footage, but we still had yet to hear any real word that he was actually in the movie. The above statement seems, at least on the surface, to confirm that he is. That’s pretty huge news considering that this is set to be the first appearance of Spider-Man in an MCU movie!

You can watch the Q&A and hear him talk about Civil War and Spider-Man in the clip below:

Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6th, 2016; Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 releases May 5, 2017; the new Spider-Man movie drops on July 28, 2017.

*Guardians of the Galaxy holds a 91% certified fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.com and 8.1 stars on IMDB.com.
