CookeDarwyn Cooke, one of the most distinct and iconic artists of the past 25 years, died today. He was 53.

The Canadian-born artist first broke into the industry in the early 1990s when he was hired by Warner Bros. animation to be a storyboard artist for Batman: The Animated Series. Over the course of his career, Cooke became best known for his vintage aesthetic on such classic series as DC: The New Frontier and Catwoman. However, Spider-Man fans were lucky enough to be graced with Cooke’s talents when he scripted and pencilled two issues of Spider-Man: Tangled Web in the early 2000s, including a Christmas-themed issue that was featured on this site as part of last year’s “Lost Gems” series.

Tangled Web 21 03Cooke’s death came as a sudden shock to the industry. Just on Friday, his wife, Marsha, confirmed that the artist was receiving palliative care for an aggressive bout of lung cancer.

Our thoughts and condolences are with the Cooke’s family and friends and with everyone whose life was impacted in some way by this once in a generation talent.
