There has certainly been plenty of news and speculation surrounding the imminent release of “Amazing Spider-Man 2,” especially after Sony Pictures released three new trailers over the weekend. The advertising campaign for the film is in full swing and is dropping names of classic Spider-Man characters left and right and has led to much speculation about who might appear in not only this film but future films in the series as well. Today, one of the long suspected rumors will be put to rest while also introducing a number of new questions.
Director Marc Webb released a tweet today in support of B.J. Novak’s new book and labelled the actor as “A. Smythe,” thus confirming his role in the film as none other than Alistair Smytle, the twisted son of Spencer Smythe. While Alistair Smythe, who after the death of his father turned himself into the ultimate Spider-Slayer, recently perished in Superior Spider-Man, it seems that he will play a role of some sort in the upcoming film.
Electro, Rhino, and Green Goblin still appear to be the primary villains of the film with Smythe just acting as another employee of Oscorp, but who is to say what presence he will have in future films. I imagine he’s just going to be providing tech to Harry Osborn and Max Dillon in this film while seeding trouble for the future.
